Gerald Matthews on Working Memory - Dictionary of Arguments

Working Memory/Cognitive Psychology/Matthews: Experiments show that anxiety affects working memory rather than retrieval, and manipulations that increase working memory load, such as adding a dual-task component, produce increasingly large performance deficits in math-anxious individuals. Ashcraft and Krause (2007)(1) also point out that math-anxious persons tend to sacrifice accuracy for speed, especially on difficult problems, in an effort to conclude the aversive experience (i.e., a form of avoidance coping).
